- Sister Acts: Celebrating the Music of Two Different Musical Families
Saturday, March 20, 8pm
Shepherd University Reynolds Hall (map | ticket info)
- You have heard that “home is where the heart is," but in some families, it's also where the best music is. Shepherdstown Music and Dance invites you to join them for an evening which celebrates the music of of two duos comprised of very talented women on Saturday, March 20; Lisa & Heather Malyuk from northeast Ohio, and the duo Gadelle, with Louise Arsenault and Helene Bergeron-Arsenault from Prince Edward Island, Canada.
- The concert showcases the special guests of the annual Upper Potomac Spring Music Weekend, where hammered dulcimer players, fiddlers and other musicians share tunes and techniques and explore a range of musical styles over three days of workshops, concerts and jam sessions on Shepherd University's campus and the surrounding historic buildings.
- Young musicians Lisa & Heather Malyuk perform an eclectic repertoire of folk tunes brought to life by Lisa's articulate hammered dulcimer and rhythmic banjo-uke coupled with Heather's inventive guitar, nykelharpa and dynamic fiddle. As homeschoolers, Lisa & Heather were able to focus their creative abilities on music and the performing arts, starting with piano at age 4. A few years later Lisa took up flute and Heather began to study the violin. When Lisa bought a hammered dulcimer on a whim, it soon became the joy of her musical career.
- Both girls found a guiding light in their teacher, hammered dulcimer virtuoso, Tina Bergmann, and joint lessons under Tina’s guidance encouraged the girls to explore and develop their unique style on traditional folk tunes. Lisa & Heather have recorded three albums, “13 Tunes”, “Summer’s End” and “Stella” and can be seen and heard at numerous music venues, festivals and other cultural events throughout northeast Ohio either playing as a duo or with their mentors, Tina and her husband Bryan Thomas.
- Gadelle is an all woman, traditional French-Acadian band whose name comes from an old Acadian word which translates as “wild berries” and also has a connotation of a feisty female. Hailing from Prince Edward Island on Canada's east coast, the group features Helene Bergeron-Arsenault on vocals, piano, pump organ, fiddle, foot percussion and step dancing and Louise Arsenault on fiddle, harmonica, foot percussion, and step-dancing and and often includes members from the newest generation of gifted traditional musicians teamed up with Louise and Helene, who are seasoned veterans of the stage from their work with the internationally acclaimed group, Barachois.
- Gadelle embodies the spirit of the Acadien people with their fiddling, their songs, their stories and their dance; with a seasoned approach to their traditions learned at kitchen parties and community gatherings at an early age, and adapted to the stage for the audience to experience first-hand. When Louise plays her fiddle, she becomes the quintessential essence of “joie-de-vivre” and the band and audience are in for a wild ride. The sound is Acadian, the songs are French, the banter is bi-lingual and the spirit is alive.
